Lori West retired this past May from the St. Joseph School District after 18 years of teaching. Her last position was as instructor at Mark Twain Elementary School as the elementary music/technology/STEM teacher. She attended Missouri Western State University receiving her Bachelor of Science in Vocal Music Education with an emphasis in piano. In 2012, Ms. West earned a Master’s Degree in Instructional Technology from Northwest Missouri State University.
As a lifelong musician, Ms. West has accompanied countless choirs, small ensembles, and soloists beginning in her sixth grade year and continuing to the present. An appetite for learning drew her to technology where she has been successful as a presenter at numerous professional development sessions and the prestigious International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE).
Ms. West has been Bel Canto’s accompanist for four years before moving to the position of Lyric Singers Accompanist for Fall 2018.
Helen Shade graduated from William Jewell College with a Bachelor of Science degree in church music and organ performance. In the years since graduation she has held several jobs in the field of music including administrative assistant at Wingert-Jones Music (now J.W. Pepper) in Kansas City; organist at Christ Lutheran Church, Platte Woods; and accompanist at Central United Methodist Church, Kansas City. She has also had the privilege to perform on recitals and accompany other choirs and individuals in Kansas City and St. Joseph.
Currently, Mrs. Shade is in her 22nd year as the K-8 music teacher at St. Paul Lutheran School in St. Joseph. She also just started her 17th year directing the church choir at St. Paul and also conducts the school and church handbell choirs. One of the things she loves the most about her current jobs is getting to make music with individuals of all ages! She is excited to join the Saint Joseph Youth Chorale family this year as accompanist for Bel Canto.
To God be the glory!
